When we think about trauma, many of us picture someone who’s visibly distressed, withdrawn,
or tearful. But trauma doesn’t always look like sadness, and it often hides in plain sight.

At Creative Healing Mental Health Center, we help people uncover how unresolved trauma
can show up in ways they may not expect: through anger outbursts, chronic anxiety, or
emotionally shutting down. These responses aren’t signs of weakness, they’re actually protective
responses rooted in survival.

Mental Health Therapy

Let’s explore why trauma shows up this way, and how therapy can help you process it safely and
compassionately.

Trauma Is Stored in the Body
Trauma isn’t just a memory, it’s an experience that gets stored in both the brain and the body.
When something overwhelming or threatening happens, your nervous system kicks into survival
mode: fight, flight, freeze, or fawn.

These responses are automatic. If your brain sensed danger and you didn’t have the safety or
support to process what happened, your body may have adapted by staying in a hyper-alert or
shut-down state, even long after the danger passed.

Trauma Response #1: Anger
Unprocessed trauma can leave the nervous system on high alert. You may find yourself snapping
at others, feeling easily irritated, or carrying an undercurrent of rage you don’t fully understand.
This is often a “fight” response, your body’s way of protecting you when it senses a threat.
Therapy can help you explore what’s underneath the anger, often grief, fear, or pain that didn’t
have a safe place to land.

Trauma Response #2: Anxiety
Constant worry, panic attacks, and hypervigilance are common symptoms of trauma. If your
brain learned to stay alert for danger, anxiety may be your body’s way of staying prepared “just
in case” something bad happens again. This is the “flight” response in action.
In therapy, we work to calm the nervous system and help you feel safe again, without always
being on guard.

Trauma Response #3: Avoidance
Sometimes, the mind and body go into shut-down mode to protect you from emotional overload.
You might avoid certain people, places, or feelings… or even struggle to remember what happened. This “freeze” or “fawn” response is common in trauma survivors who felt powerless or had to mask their true selves to survive.
Avoidance isn’t laziness or lack of motivation. It’s a trauma response—and it’s something we can
gently work through together.
